The India–UK Free Trade Agreement:
Good News for Saree Lovers
Britain and India have signed a historic trade agreement — and it makes buying authentic Indian sarees in the UK better than ever. Here is what it means for you, explained simply.
What happened?
24 July 2025India and the UK sign the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) in London — the UK's biggest trade deal since leaving the EU.
15 July 2026The agreement officially comes into force after approval by both parliaments.
Today99% of Indian goods — including textiles — now enter the UK completely duty-free.
What changed for Indian textiles?
Before the agreement
up to 12%
UK import duty on Indian textiles and clothing. That cost was quietly built into the price of almost every Indian garment sold in Britain.
Now, under CETA
0%
Duty on 1,143 textile categories — including woven fabrics under HS code 5407, the international classification that covers almost all Vastranand sarees (our main code: 540710).

Your questions, answered
Do I pay customs duty on a saree from Vastranand UK?+
No. Under the India–UK trade agreement in force since 15 July 2026, Indian-origin textiles enter the UK duty-free. Our sarees are handcrafted at our own factory in Surat, India, so they fully qualify.
Will the delivery driver ask me for extra money?+
No import duty applies to our sarees, and UK VAT is already included in our prices. If you are ever asked for an unexpected charge, contact us at uk.vastranand@gmail.com before paying and we will resolve it for you.
What is HS code 540710?+
Every product that crosses a border has an international classification number called an HS (or HSN) code. 540710 covers woven fabrics of synthetic filament yarn — the classification for most Vastranand sarees. It is one of the 1,143 textile categories that became duty-free under the agreement.
When did the agreement start?+
The agreement was signed in London on 24 July 2025 and came into force on 15 July 2026 after both parliaments approved it.
Does this make sarees cheaper in the UK?+
For many retailers, duty was one more cost passed to customers. Vastranand already sells at the same factory price as India, with no retail markup — the agreement means nothing extra is added on top. One journey: our factory to your door.
Are all Vastranand products covered?+
Yes — sarees, dresses, dupattas and scarves are all Indian-made textiles, and Indian textiles across the board received duty-free access under the agreement.
